Learning Plus approaches the subject of mathematics from a heuristic (a method of education in which the pupil is trained to discover or learn new things for themselves) approach. We assume each student needs to master the subject for both school and life. As we test new students coming in we find they are weak in three basic areas; nomenclature, facts, and concepts. This results in slow, laborious math skills, low grades, and a fear of math. Mathematics is a subject of quantities and of changing these quantities in four different ways; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Many students come to us and think math is counting, because that is all they have done so far. So our first job is to let the student discover exactly what math is. At this point we introduce "the rods" which are blocks divided up into incremental amounts. The rods allow the student to get out of counting in their head and to put their attention out into the physical universe and to look and see the quantities of matter. The first concept the student needs to master is the concept of "amount" because in math you are dealing with "amounts" in the physical universe. Rarely do we have a student who understands this at first. The staff at Learning Plus is highly trained, and has studied the various successful teaching methods available today such as Saxon, Mortenson, Cuisinare, etc. We have created our own test that accurately measures a student's knowledge in these areas allowing us to diagnose a student's specific problem and fit a tailored program to the individual's needs. It is quite remarkable to see students change from slow, bored, counting students to quick, accurate, interested students. This is done by clearing the words of math, sharpening facts, and demonstrating concepts. It works and it doesn't take a long time. If a student is weak in any of these areas math will be a struggle and will be something they don't like to do. As a result of our complete approach, we continually receive success stories from students who are finally excelling in the subject of math. If you feel that your child may need one-on-one help with the following math subjects please call us today for a consultation: math concepts, math facts, word problems, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and integrated math.
